Neighborhood Noise

I had hoped to ride my horses today, but of course everyone and his brother had to be out doing his thing. My next door neighbors had trucks hauling other trucks in on trailers and were parking them along my fence line. The horses were so disturbed that they wouldn't eat their lunch. The guy down the road was working on a dragster engine. Here's what it sounds like from my front doorstep. My office, where I try to work -- "try" being the operative word, is just to my left and it is that loud through the windows. The dragster is actually inside a garage that is off in the distance beyond the pine trees. I'm a horse trainer surrounded by mechanics and construction workers, which sucks for me. Make sure your speakers are on...

Now do you believe me when I tell you that my neighborhood is noisy?

NM -- the video is set to private. Unless you want to approve everyone individually, you'll have to make it a public video.

Katharine - Thanks for letting me know. I made it public. This was my first attempt at including a YouTube video on my blog.

What? Are you kidding me? It sounds like you are at a race track!! That is nuts!! I think you could have ridden good ole Bombay!! He would have behaved. :) He's my favorite!

Thanks for fixing it, NM!

And... OH. MY. GOD. Yes, now I understand. In fact, I'm surprised you haven't gone completely out of your mind by now!

Wow! That is just terrible!

Even when one of our neighbors was doing a full landscaping job with dumptrucks and tractors being driven in and out, it never sounded that loud. But we are all rather spread out. I like it that way because it does afford some privacy. But everyone around here seems to appreciate peace and quiet, too. And the only real noise we have our natural ones like coyotes, chickens, a peacock, cows, goats, and the horses neighing.
I think I would go bonkers if that was the type of noise I heard around here on most days because we live in a valley and noise does carry pretty well.

Hang in there.
You really do need to move.

That sucks! And I thought my neighborhood was bad. Of course people riding four wheelers and popping wheelies down the hill by my house is unpleasant, but it isn't all the time. I hope the crazy people (your neighbors) move away or find their brains.

Nuzz, our city has a noise ordinance and anything over a certain noise level is a violation. Does this apply to where you live? That is just ridiculous!

It's noisy around here right now, but it's mostly what I call "honest noise" from the farmers trying to get the last of last year's corn crop in before mus season starts. My horses are immune to it. However, the mud truck guy around the corner has been working on his stuff and while the horses no longer care it gets on my nerves and is about as loud as your video.

You would think your horses would be fairly immune/used to all those noises by now, especially as often as you say it's really noisy and busy around here.

Recently we had work crews and HUGE machinery working on putting in an oil pipeline at the edge of our property all hours of the day, pretty much next to the horses. The first day they were looky, not spooky, just looky. Then, they just didn't care, even when the crews had the chainsaws out and the earthmoving equipment roaring.

We had helicopters swooping low over the trees/pastures and the horses barely gave them a glance. The neighbor is constantly target practicing and the other neighbor's kids ride their 4-wheelers and dirt bikes all over the place.

They rarely bat an eye at any of it, even the weirdest, loudest stuff. I can't help but wonder if part of your horse's "upset" by the noises is them reading you being upset and frustrated by the noise/activity.

That's funny! My neighbors have race cars and usually do their tuning up on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons. My girls have gotten used to it.... we also are in the flight path for Navy jets and there is a gun range just down the street from us. The horses still jump when a gun goes off close to them, but are desensitized to shooting in the distance. Now, with the new neighborhood behind us - they get to hear very loud bass music from the cars going by....and did I mention that a Budhist temple was erected behind us as well? When they have outside gatherings, the music and festivities go on till about 10 pm. I figure it's all free training. :-) At least I don't have crazy, nosy neighbors.
